Windows Update StandAlone .381

Thursday, October 4, 2007

Many of you may have read about the “silent” updates that Microsoft pushes out to its Windows Update clients. Although much FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) has been proliferating around the internet about this, I find no fault in the practice. I wouldn’t do it with my software, but Microsoft can do what they want with their OS. Canonical certainly does, as does Apple. They just don’t have enough users to complain.

Anway, our corporation has been having trouble getting the update. It seems that either Novell’s BorderManager, the Bess filtering system, or Windows Update itself cannot travers through our network to get the update (update 7.0.6000.381). After sifting through countless .cab files, .xml files, and hotfix .mui descriptions, I finally found the standalone installer. The links for both the x86 and x64 are below.

Keep on patching. Goodness knows the world needs more dedicated patchers! Maybe we can kill the Storm Worm. But that’s for another post not too far away…
